Professor, associate professor and assistant professor are capitalized only when directly preceding a name. Lowercase when succeeding a name or when used without a name. Professor emerita is the feminine singular; professors emeritae is the feminine plural. Professor emeritus is the masculine singular; professors emeriti is the masculine plural and also is the form when referring to retired professors of both genders.
Avoid using professor as a generic term for a faculty member.
