Why a new wustl.edu?
It has been more than five years since we refreshed the “front door” to the university’s online presence. The new wustl.edu conveys a much stronger sense of who we are and our strengths as an institution. It also makes it easier to find information and get to other areas in the WashU web environment.
How did you come up with the redesign?
The effort has been as much “science” as “art.” We started by spending a lot of time studying analytics and other data to get a solid sense of who is visiting wustl.edu and what they experience on the site. We also solicited the input of many partners across the university. Only then did we get to work on designing the new site – with simplicity, beauty, and an exceptional user experience as our top priorities.
What are the big changes?
You’ll see a much cleaner design, more inspiring content, and simpler navigation. If you come to the site with a destination in mind, we want to get you there quickly. If you have a little time to linger, we want to inspire you with stories, imagery and a stronger tug to campus. One of the most significant changes is that the site is designed with mobile devices in mind. Content should be easily experienced and accessible no matter the type of phone or tablet you use.
Will the URL be changing?
No. wustl.edu continues to be our main address.
What about school, department, program or unit websites? Will those be changing?
No. The only changes we’ve made are to the core wustl.edu site (home page and underlying pages). However, with the new university-wide template and updated brand guidelines, everyone has the opportunity to update their sites to align more closely to the university’s new look and feel. You can learn more about both of these at http://marcomm.wustl.edu.
How will I find things on the new site?
Same as always, but with some tightening of the navigation. The search function, directory and a new link to Washington University Physicians (for those seeking a doctor) are at the top of the home page. Topical navigation will cover academics, research, the campus experience and additional information about the university. Audience navigation will be geared toward prospective and current students, parents and families, faculty, staff, alumni and friends.
After the site launches, will I be able to share some feedback?
Absolutely. In fact, we welcome it! For the first few weeks, you’ll see a prompt to a feedback form. After that, you always can contact the team at email@example.com. We will be making regular updates and enhancements.
What if I have trouble using the new site?
We’ll have some tools available to help familiarize you to the new site, including an FAQ. If you still need assistance, the team is available at firstname.lastname@example.org. But we’re confident you will find the experience not only easier, but a lot more fulfilling.
What else is new?
We’re also excited to be launching a new platform called The Source, where you’ll learn about the very best of the university’s people, discoveries and happenings, in a dynamic, visual and engaging new site. The Source will be home to the Newsroom, Washington Magazine, and the electronic archive of the Record email newsletter. We hope you’ll enjoy exploring The Source when it goes live on Feb. 2.
